During his term as Mayor, Councillor Ray Armstrong chose Winter Warmth as his Mayor's charity. For nearly 30 years Winter Warmth has provided free food and fellowship for people in need in Weston-super-Mare. It is held at various Church Halls in the Town Centre every evening of the week during the five months of Greenwich Mean Time. Councillor Armstrong and the past Mayoress, Mrs Joan Dunne, presented a cheque for £1244.47 to the Winter Warmth Chairman, Salvation Army Major Gordon Fozzard.
Liberal Democrat councillors on North Somerset Council have warned that plans by the Conservative-run authority to reduce opening hours and introduce charges for so-called DIY waste will make life more difficult for local residents and discourage the responsible disposal of rubbish.
